Kate Millett
Artistic Director / Director
Described by the Herald Sun as "reinforcing opera with an edge", and by the Age as "too loud", Kate (she/her) is an award-winning opera director, with a focus on creating socially responsible opera. In 2016, she founded BK Opera and has gone on to produce and direct a vast array of operas, ranging from Puccini to Poulenc, Mozart to Massenet, as well as multiple marathon opera performances for White Nights across Victoria. Millett has become known for her dark and intimate work, with her production of ‘Abduction from the Seraglio’ later invited to be a part of London’s Opera in the City Festival.
Having primarily worked in Melbourne, Australia, Kate has collaborated with renowned opera companies Australia wide, including such as Victorian Opera, Melbourne Opera, Opera Australia, iOpera, BK Opera, Pinchgut Opera, WA Opera, and the Adelaide Festival, interning under Neil Armfield.
With determination and resilience, she continues to carve her own path, focused on creating groundbreaking productions that redefine opera. Her ultimate goal is to present innovative, unconventional shows that showcase the full range of what opera can be, reinterpreting opera through a modern lens, making it relevant and thought-provoking for contemporary audiences.
Outside of opera, she has an abiding interest in aerospace, spending 2019 as head of Mission Control for RMIT’s award-winning HIVE Rocketry team and successfully launching a sounding rocket to 30 000 feet.
